In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a high school senior or current undergraduate student at the time of application.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.
  4. Must have declared a program of study in law enforcement (or criminal justice, administration of justice or police science).
  5. Must have graduated from a public or private high school in San Mateo County or Santa Clara County.
  6. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.

Description: The Harold Johnson Law Enforcement Scholarship is available for graduating seniors and graduates of a public or private high school in San Mateo County or Santa Clara County. Applicants must have declared a program of study in law enforcement (or criminal justice, administration of justice or police science) and plan on pursuing a career in police work, corrections or other criminal justice fields.

Additional Information: The Harold Johnson Law Enforcement Scholarship was established in memory of Police Chief Harold Johnson to provide scholarship support to students who plan on pursuing a career in police work, corrections, or other criminal justice fields. These scholarships are designed to recognize students who demonstrate a passion for public service, academic potential, leadership, and financial need.

Award Amount: Up to $5,000 annually. While renewal is not automatic, previous winners are eligible to re-apply.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $5,000.

Applications are available on the Silicon Valley Community Foundation website. In addition to a completed application, the applicant must also submit the following: two letters of recommendation (the letters must be from the people listed on the application); an official transcript of grades; a personal statement addressing the topics listed on the application; evidence of financial need as described on the application; and proof of U.S. citizenship (photocopy of birth certificate, passport or naturalization papers). The complete application packet must be completed online by the deadline date.
