Law firm scholarships help to offset the cost of college or law school. They are available from large and small law firms and in many niche fields. Business law, criminal law, immigration and tax law are a few examples.
These vary as some law firms want to help certain kinds of students. For example, Veterans, women and minorities may qualify for the scholarships.
But often they invite any undergraduate or law student (1L, 2L, or 3L) to apply. Law students must attend an accredited USA college, university, or law school. Apart from these criteria, a scholarship may come with a few qualifiers. They will also look at your GPA and record of community service.
Along with this information, an application may ask for reference letters. These attest to your character and may come from employers, professors or mentors.
To narrow the field of applicants, a law firm may also ask you to write an essay or cover letter for the scholarship. You could explain your future goals or point of view on a legal matter. You might also need to describe why a specific type of law interests you. So, if you have any related studies, internships or experiences, these may help you stand out.
How Do Scholarships from Law Firms Help Pay for College?
A law firm scholarship may be useful if your goal is to pursue a three year law degree. Scholarships may help cover your tuition, fees, room and board and other expenses. According to Data USA, a law degree at a public college costs about $8,698 per year. Tuition is much higher ($42,627) at private colleges. Once you graduate, there are many possible career paths and areas of practice.
Apart from a sharp mind, lawyers tend to need a Juris Doctor (JD degree). The average salary is $120,910 per year. So, this may be an option to prepare for.
An example of a law firm scholarship is Rise to Shine Scholarship. Allen, Flatt, Balladis & Leslie Inc. awards one winner $1,000 to cover educational expenses. To qualify, applicants must have a 3.0 GPA or higher, be a US citizen or permanent resident, and currently be a high school senior or undergrad.

A popular story adapted from Loren Eiseley’s essay, “The Star Thrower” highlights the power one person’s efforts can make. The story tells of a young girl who was walking along a beach throwing beached starfish back into the ocean. A man comes up to the girl and says she is wasting her time, as she couldn’t possibly help all of the starfish that found themselves beached. After a short moment, the girl picks up and throws another starfish back into the sea and says “I made a difference to that one.” The man is inspired to join the girl in her efforts, which ultimately has a ripple effect on others nearby who help save every last starfish on the beach.
This story is a metaphor for the power one person’s actions can have in affecting significant change in the world. It is easy to think that one person can’t make a difference, so why even try? Our team at Whetstone Perkins & Fulda, LLC understands the message behind the starfish’s tale, and that is why we are offering The Starfish Scholarship.
The Starfish Scholarship will be available to high school seniors and current college students who best answer what social justice means to them. Our goal is to encourage students to think about what social justice is and how their actions can have an impact on the world around them. The student who shares the most thoughtful and well-written response will receive a $1,000 scholarship to help pay for their continued education.
Grandparents, great aunts and uncles, and close family friends make huge impacts in our lives, and what they have taught us and the lessons they pass on to us are invaluable. Many of us learn about moral values, respect, accountability, and more through these family members. The team at D’Amico & Pettinicchi knows firsthand just how valuable these lessons can be, which is why we have created the D’Amico & Pettinicchi Generational Wisdom Scholarship!
This $2,500 scholarship is intended to assist one student with the financial burden of tuition. In order to apply, please tell us about the generational wisdom you’ve experienced throughout your life. What is a lesson or teaching you’ve learned from a grandparent, great aunt, uncle, or family friend that has influenced an aspect of your life? Is there anything you can do to pass down these lessons or teachings to your community or a younger generation? We would love to hear from all of you, so please apply by our September 30th, 2024 deadline.
