Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund

Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for international and U.S. students.
  2. Must have participated in activities in the United States and be planning to enroll in an accredited program in the United States in order to apply. There is a strong preference to award grants to students who are planning on staying in the United States and building the progressive movement there.
  3. Must be a student activist who is involved in building the progressive movement for social and economic justice. Recent grantees have been active in the struggle against racism, sexism, homophobia, and other forms of oppression; building the movement for economic justice; and creating peace through international, anti-imperialist solidarity. Students must be currently active in eligible activities at the time of application.
  4. Must be currently enrolled in college at the undergraduate or graduate levels at time of application.

Additional Information: The Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund aids people active in movements for social and economic justice. The scholarships are awarded based on financial need and to students demonstrating activism in the struggle against racism, sexism, homophobia and/or other forms of oppression; building a movement for economic justice; and creating peace through international anti-imperialist solidarity. Please note: The DPSF provides specific information on assembling the application packet on its website in the 'Frequently Asked Questions' section. The student should review these directions carefully to ensure that his/her packet conforms to the listed specifications. Applications that are completed and/or assembled incorrectly will be disqualified. The 'FAQ' section information is taken down after the application deadline date each year.

Award Amount: Up to $15,000 per year  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $60,000.

Applications are available on the Davis-Putter Scholarship Fund (DPSF) website. The application must be completed in Adobe PDF; alternate formats are not accepted. Students who are unable to complete the application on their computers may print out a blank copy and print or handwrite the information. The scholarship packet must include the following materials: the completed application form; a personal statement no longer than 1,000 words describing the student's activism and goals (further details available on the DPSF website); transcripts covering all periods of enrollment at a college or university; two signed letters of recommendation from individuals who are familiar with the student's activities (further details available on the DPSF website); a copy of the student's SAR (Student Aid Report); and a recent photograph, suitable for reproduction. The SAR is generated by filing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). The FAFSA is available online at www.fafsa.ed.gov, at college financial aid offices, and at high school guidance offices. Three copies, including the original and two photocopies, of the completed application and all supporting materials (only one photograph is required) must be submitted online by the deadline date. Emailed and faxed applications are not accepted.
