Number of Awards & Eligibility: The number of awards offered varies annually. In the 2013-2014 academic year (the most recent for which data is available), there were 83 awards given.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. This award is for U.S. students.
  2. Must be a resident of Maine.
  3. Must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
  4. Must be pursuing initial certification as a teacher, including speech pathology or child care provider qualifications. The current definition of a "teacher" also includes Chapter I tutor, guidance counselor, and librarian-media specialist.
  5. Must be a U.S. citizen.
  6. Must be an incoming or current undergraduate or graduate student.
  7. Must enroll full time at any U.S accredited college or university.

In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:

Description: This forgivable loan program is available to Maine graduating high school seniors, undergraduate students, and graduate students who are pursuing initial certification as a teacher, including speech pathology or child care provider qualifications. Students must have a grade point average of 3.0 or higher.

Additional Information: The Educators for Maine (EFM) Program is a competitive, merit-based, forgivable loan program for Maine students pursuing careers in teaching, including speech pathology and child development or childcare. All applicants must demonstrate community service involvement, school activities, and leadership positions. New applications are reviewed by a selection committee. Committee members only review applications that meet the minimum eligibility criteria based on: academic performance; awards and special honors; relevant activities; grammar, style, and content of the 500-word essay. Recipients must intend to work in Maine after completing their education and cannot currently hold state certification to teach or child care provider qualifications, as applicable. Recipients who do not perform eligible work in Maine at an eligible school or child care facility must repay the loan to FAME with interest.

Award Amount: The award is in the form of a forgivable loan and is for the following amounts: $3,000 annually for undergraduate students; $2,000 annually for graduate students. Undergraduate students may receive a maximum amount of $12,000 through the program, and graduate students may receive a maximum of $8,000.Students may renew the award by filing a FAFSA and renewal application by May 1 annually, and maintaining a grade point average of 2.5 or higher.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,886.
