Description: The Bess Whitehead Scott - Scribes Scholarship is available for journalism and communications students in Texas who are 40 years of age or older. Award selection will be based on a combination of academic achievement and financial need.

Additional Information: The Bess Whitehead Scott - Scribes Scholarship is provided in memory of Bess Whitehead Scott, a longtime resident of the area and the first female reporter at The Houston Post. Bess blazed a pioneering trail for women in the news industry and extended her legacy with an second career, later in life, as a teacher of journalism. In honor of her love for journalism and her later-life career, a scholarship is awarded annually to a Texas student over the age of 40 who is pursuing a journalism or communications degree. This scholarship is administered and managed through the Austin Community Foundation. Founded in 1977, the Austin Community Foundation has expanded to combine philanthropists, community leaders, and advanced financial management technologies. The foundation works to identify and assist the local populations in greatest need through a combination of scholarships, local initiatives, and grants. Award Amount: $2,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $2,000.
