Additional Information: The James L. Allhands Award is administered by the AGC Education and Research Foundation. The Allhands Essay Competition is for college seniors, and this award is made possible through a generous contribution to the AGC Foundation by the late James L. Allhands, one of the founding members of The Associated General Contractors of America. Mr. Allhands was a prolific writer of construction-related books and wanted his work continued by today's students. All essays will be evaluated by a team of contractors and educators from the AGC Foundation Board of Directors. It should be noted that the following items are MAJOR considerations in judging the entries: grammar, clear expression of thought, originality and unique ideas, thorough coverage of subject matter, specific examples to support opinions, neatness, creativity, adherence to competition guidelines for essay length, and meeting submission deadlines. Winners will be notified in February, and checks will be mailed in March. No cash substitutions will be provided if the first-place winner chooses not to participate in the convention trips. Public announcement will be made by the AGC Foundation President at the AGC Annual Convention in March.

Award Amount: One first-place award of $1,000 and a trip to AGC Annual Convention (includes roundtrip airfare, plus meals and lodging for five days), one second-place award of $500, and one third-place award of $300. All awards are made on an annual basis, and are non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,800.
