Number of Awards & Eligibility: One award offered annually.
In order to qualify, students must meet the following criteria:
  1. Must be a resident of Kent County, Michigan.
  2. Must be an undergraduate student at the time of application.
  3. Must be a U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident.
  4. This award is for U.S. students.
  5. Must have a pilot's license and pursue a major that will lead to a career in aviation.
  6. Must have a grade point average of 2.75 or higher.

Additional Information: The Grand Rapids Community Foundation awards hundreds of scholarships annually, primarily to Kent County students bound for or in college, or those pursuing a technical career. This scholarship, provided in honor of Joshua Esch Mitchell, is provided annually to a Kent County resident with a pilot's license who is pursuing a degree related to aviation, aviation safety, or aviation management. A letter of recommendation from a professional in the aviation field is required. Selection is based on academic record and financial need.

Award Amount: Awards range from $500 to $5,000 depending on the student's unmet need and the availability of funds. Average awards are about $1,000 annually, non-renewable.  The total dollars awarded for this scholarship is $1,000.
