College of Southern Nevada definitely wasn't my first choice when it came to where I wanted to go after graduating high school. I've dreamt of going to University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV), as that's where all of my friends and peers wanted to go. It was the next big thing! However, the more I walk home past it, the more I fell in love with it. I live about 2 miles away from this community college, and I decided hat it would be a lot more reasonable to attend here for my Associate's Nursing degree. Boy, was that the best decision I made. The faculty is the most kindest, the most helpful, and the most passionate individuals I've met. They put student success to such a high priority that I am very glad I chose them towards my career. Sometimes in life, the little small things that people say they are to be can make the biggest of impacts, and CSN sure did.

The College of Southern Nevada (CSN) is a public community college located in the Las Vegas metropolitan area. It serves as an important educational institution for a diverse student population, offering a wide range of programs, including associate degrees, certificates, and workforce development opportunities. CSN’s mission is to provide accessible, high-quality education that prepares students for successful careers, further education, and active participation in their communities. One of CSN’s key strengths is its emphasis on accessibility and affordability. As a community college, it provides an option for students who may not be able to attend a four-year institution due to financial constraints or other factors. CSN also supports non-traditional students, including adult learners, veterans, and working professionals, offering flexible schedules and evening classes to accommodate a wide variety of student needs. CSN has a reputation for its strong academic programs, especially in fields like health sciences, business, and technology. It also plays a critical role in workforce development by offering training programs aligned with the needs of local industries. This connection with the business community helps students acquire skills that are directly applicable in the job market. However, like many community colleges, CSN faces challenges related to limited funding, which can impact resources available for students and faculty. Despite this, it remains an essential part of the educational landscape in southern Nevada, providing a pathway to higher education and career success for many individuals who might not otherwise have access to it.

The staff and teachers are incredibly supportive, showing genuine care for student growth and success. The sense of safety on campus is excellent, with active and attentive security always present. CSN offers a variety of resources that make it easier for students to focus on their education and achieve their goals. Whether it’s the welcoming atmosphere, dedicated faculty, or strong security measures, CSN stands out as a great place to learn and grow.

They know what they are talking about and how to use the technology so there aren't always a lot of mishaps going on. Overall, such a great school!

  2. What should every freshman at your school know before they start?

I suppose it would have to begin with a short story; as a highscool senior, college was not something I even considered. Coming from a family who has never gone to college nor pushed education strongly at all, I had other desires. Working fresh out of highschool taught me quickly that the world is not so kind to those who are not educated, and so I took it upon myself to head back to school. I wish I could've told my highschool self to try harder. I did not have any motivation to do well in school and indeed, felt as though school was not fun at all. However, after completing my first degree with plans to attend a higher university, I can say without a doubt - it was the most beautiful experience of my life. In essences, all I wish I could've had told myself was to try... as I find that is the most important aspect of doing work - all you have to do is try.

  3. What do you consider the worst thing about your school? Why?

Having gotten used to the words of my peers telling me that college resources and offices were there for students' immediate use, I was expecting that to be true. That is not the case. I understand that the school employees have a job to keep; however, students come first. I should not have to keep calling and leavings messages to get a simple question answered. The worst thing about me school is that I have to wait DAYS before I have help.

  10. What kind of person should attend this school?

I am usually one of the oldest in any of my classes being 30. I always feel like I am at a high school..it is not a bad thing, but the atmosphere is like that. I work full time to pay for my schooling, and work very hard for my GPA. I am proud to say our school has one of the best science programs on the west coast, and we have very high standards for our science and medical programs. People with dedication should come here, this school is way underrated by the attendees.

  14. What are the academics like at your school?

To be honest even my least favorite class (physics) the teacher was really cool and fair to the students. Class participation is pretty good, the classes are not as large as at the university here, 30 people verses 300 people. You can interact with the teacher and have your questions answered. Students being competitive... Not really. Everyone is on their own path, and that can foster cooperation. My major is cardiac medical diagnostic sonography. This program accepts 10 students a year. Scores are based on GPA, test scores, volunteering, and shadowing. More competitive just because of limited students accepted. I have never spent time outside of class with a professor. However, most of them are very good at email communication.
